Yellowjacket – The Spectrum of Day

The Spectrum of DayHere is the first release from the bright, young producer Yellowjacket. Hailing from Porter, Indiana, the 19-year-old shows a lot of maturity on The Spectrum Of Day album. Warm melodies buzz about strong drum patterns, tying together tight hip-hop beats tuned in to various vibes, often feeling both fresh and instantly familiar at the same time. Tracks like the funky ringer “Blazing Noon”, the hypnotic and folkish “Begin The Day”, and the electric guitar slathered “Dead Of Night” are stingingly sharp in their percussive rhythms, making up the more aggressive examples of the release. Progressively lightening up, “Cold Sweats” is delicately strung while “Grocery Choppin'” and “The Track Of Dawn” make use of soft keys, buoyant bass lines, and soothing atmospheres for a peaceful effect. These beats will be nesting in quite a few downtempo DJ crates, promising much more to look forward to from this young artist.

2. Yellowjacket – Begin the Day (2:43)
3. Yellowjacket – Blazing Noon (3:36)

My Neighbour Is – Ska-Kan-Ka

Ska-Kan-KaThe prolific Manchester-based artist known as Robot Needs Oil has been found covertly recording downtempo, reggae, and hip hop fueled beats under the curious name of My Neighbour Is. His latest release for Cold Busted under this moniker, Ska-Kan-Ka, places his love of dub, reggae, and a solid skankin’ rhythm on display once again, much like his previous Metaphysical Juicer album on the label. There is a noticeable difference this time in that the songs have less dancehall and dub appeal, forgoing these reggae influences for a more strictly roots approach — and even incorporating a slight balearic feel at times — but still totally party rockin’ in a ska-like fashion. Essentially this is island calypso meets American funk in a lighthearted blend … because it’s done by a Brit, of course! It’s just another day in the backyard of My Neighbour Is. He’s blessed up his downtempo, hip hop breaks styling with an obvious level of respect and inspiration awarded towards the Jamaican sound.

1. My Neighbour Is – Ska-Kan-Ka (3:29)
2. My Neighbour Is – Kingston Boat (5:40)
3. My Neighbour Is – Szynkwas (3:54)

DJ Pippi & Sandro S – Fatal Feat. Laurence B

FatalItalian by name, German by trade, and with a career forged by Ibiza, DJ Pippi once again has hooked up with Sandro S, the name behind one of Italy’s top house labels, CibiCaldi Recordings. Together, along with a short vocal feature by Laurance B, they have created a vibe-laden, breezy and jazzy cut for Cold Busted. Chilled, but not lacking in groove, “Fatal” is a rhythmic and classy killer with impeccable timing, landing during a summer where much of the world’s attention is focused on Brazil. Using bells, shakers, and a hiccup of vocal chants, a tinge of samba gives way to the refined cool of a balearic touch, both reflective of paradise settings.

Moving on to the remixes, Green Street are three production minded friends that host the Str8 Busted Podcast out of the southeastern United States. Their Dub ups the funk with more prominent guitars and the introduction of a wailing organ melody and stabs. Mojo Rising hails from a Los Angeles rave DJ background, having taken that initial spark and channeled it into academia in order to grow as a downtempo and trip-hop producer. He adds smooth, rhythmic glitches, more booming — but deep — bass, and an angelic vocal hymn to the breakdown. Finally, Polish Cold Busted fam LoopMaffia takes a complete departure from the original heading towards experimental electronica with mutating synths, hard-to-place percussive elements, and strange voices fitting of the ‘Grim Void’ remix title. An included instrumental of the original rounds off another hot Cold Busted release sure to kickstart an idyllic summer.
