Creative Control – Cultivation EP (BUSTED32)

Inspiring, culturally rich and pleasing, the Cultivation EP from Nashville’s Creative Control dips into innovative sampling, into the breast of Trip Hop, instrumental Hip Hop and Math Rock influences. ‘Black Hole’ introduces us into the casual, slightly psychedelic and beat manipulating experimental sonic palette of the artist. ‘Fedora & Lace’ captivates with a fatty bassline, funky reverberating guitar, and infectious seductive melody. Following is ‘Kayo High-Step’ with piano notes and a guitar rhythm like the feeling of a bright morning, a slow motion dance in the grass, layered with samples cut in, and beat repeats. ‘Anahata’ ramps in with distorted wildly colorful sounds into hard-hitting drums, a resounding low frequency, mesmerizing synths and complex subtle guitar riffs that all fade out. In ‘Midnight Blue’ a familiar singer croons, live easy-going drums set the mood, as does the crackle of analog vinyl, sweetly purring strings and a tender trumpet. ‘Dark Cultivation’ spellbinds with sorrowful, beautiful female vocals, menacing cello, a deep booming kick drum and dark rhythm. A lovely panoramic album often capturing emotive slices of the past in present day forms, fans of Alias, 13 & God, Boards of Canada and Prefuse73 would dig this EP.

New Jersey’s Stape Mega delivers ‘Metrica Mega’ an LP on Cold Busted with mechanical zeal, Electronic, Downtempo and Hip Hop beats and styles crafted with robotic celebration. Catching my ear immediately was ‘Mechanica’ a short piece with intriguing samples, pulsing game boy sounds, and dark beats. ‘Automation Nation’ follows a pleasingly languid tune with waning guitars, Lo-fi crackles, rubbery hip beats and a Goth tinged singer crooning. ‘Dynamics’ comes fresh and immediate, a tune with a spicy melody and lively bassline at about 92BPM, with dope breaks, solid snares and staccatos. Another vignette, ‘Water Clock’ is a bleeped out Downtempo tune at 72 BPM with an eerie dark synth, beats with brushed on hi hats and intoxicating subtle deep bass notes. The sheer multifaceted, electronic goodness of this album will keep you listening, an experimental and underground genre bending, and enticing piece of work from Stape Mega.
