Rodney Aguilera, who goes by the production moniker “pstgrd”, has been a music enthusiast since as far as he can remember. First being exposed to disco, funk, and soul records from his father’s record collection, and later listening to and becoming a fan of electronic, r&b, and hip-hop music.
He took his love of music and began DJing in the mid 90’s, as a member of one of San Diego’s prominent DJ crews (3-Style Attractions/ZXR), performing at various underground parties and club venues.
While still DJing on occasion, he has now turned his focus on production. Growing up during the “Golden Era” of hip-hop, he sites groups such as A Tribe Called Quest and producers such as DJ Premier, Pete Rock, and J Dilla as heavy influences. Also a fan of some of the electronic music acts during the same era, he sites Orbital, FSoL, Aphex Twin, The Orb and the artists and music from old record labels such Moving Shadow, Suburban Base, and FFRR as inspiration for his music as well.
“I want my music to exude a sense of soul and to have an undeniable groove…they won’t always be musical masterpieces, but if my music makes your head bob, dance, or makes your neck snap, then I’ve accomplished what I set off to do.”
